Help Us Restore A Crown Jewel Of Southern History

The Winnie Davis Hall of History was completed in 1904. It was Built for the purpose of preserving and promoting Southern history, literature, and traditions.

Dr. Lee Davis Lodge was president of Limestone College from 1899 until his death in 1923. Dr. Lodge believed that the majority of history textbooks interpreted the War Between the States from a Northern point of view. Dr. Lodge sought a way to present a more balanced view of the conflict, while reducing the bitter feelings that remained between the North and South.

The Winnie Davis Hall of History was created to preserve and promote Southern History and Southern Literature. The building to house this program was named for Winnie Davis, the daughter of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Varina Howell Davis. Winnie Davis was born in the Confederate White House in Richmond during the War Between the States and through her life was known as the “Daughter of the Confederacy.”
